Double page spread research

I feel these double page spread have the conventions i would wish to carry through onto my own double page spread. The simple yet dynamic layout with equal amount of text and image on the double page creates an even tone and an inviting layout. On both double page spreads the image placed on the pages is large however it does not shadow the text and both features are equally visible. The colours used on the double page spreads are similar to the contents page i researched. Again the colour palet remains an unvaried tone , with black, white and grey remaining the main colour features on the double page spread. However the main image of the double page spread features model introduces new bold colours to empahise the improtance of the artist that may be featured on the double page. On the two examples i have studied the models are staring directly at the camera to keep strong intimacy with the reader , this is a convention i used on both my cover and contents page and will continue to use on my double page spread.

contents pages

i have looked at the contents pages pictured left because i feel they have the conventions that would suit my genre of music magazine which is indie pop. The contents pages i have researched are simple and neat , with an equal amount of text and the use of one image. I will follow these conventions when creating my music magazine contents page by using only one image and a sufficent amount of text on the contents page. I also feel the colours grey, black and white which are used on the two contents page would fit the genre of my music magazine therefore it is a convention i will carry out on my own contents page inorder to create the whole ' relaxed indie' look.

cover shot.

This is the final image is chose to use on my music magazine cover. The reason i chose to use this shot instead of the others i shot is because i feel this image creates a strong intimacy between the cover model and viewer due to the strong eye contact shown on the model. I also feel that my model portrays the attitude and look i want to be constructed. She embodies the image of an indie pop chick with a relaxed attitude.

These images are mock's of what i intend for my music magazine cover, contents page and double page spread should look like. I will relate back to these mock sketches when creating my actualy peices inorder to see if i am following the ideas and former plan i created. If i make any changes i will state why i made these changes and decided not to use to layout created on the mockups. I have decided to stick with my genre of ' indie pop' and to create this on my cover i will produce. I intend to create these mockups in my final productions without making too many changes.

  1. These are the shots that i took for my cover. I took a variety of shots as i wanted to have a wide selection of different shots to choose from . By creating the wild indie chick look i put suglasses on my model and to have her posed in an almost arrogant manner to create a rock star persona in the shots. I then chose to have close up and medium close ups of my model posed in a natural and calm manner to show different sides to my model who is featured in my magazine as a rock star. The lighting i chose to have in my shoot was prodomanatly dark with a hint of light placed on the left lower hand corner to higlight my models face whilst still keeping the remaining surrounding set in dark, moody and shadowed light. The shot i decided to use for my cover was a mid-shot of my model , where the light is shining on half her face , creating a moody , monotonal look.

Test Shoot

The images pictured above show the test shoot i completed inorder to test out the idea i would have liked to carry out when creating my own magazine cover. I had my model shake her hair and also jump up and down with a guitar. The model shaking her hair did not work as the hair was to wild and it would be to hard to edit. Also when my model jumped up and down it was too hard to capture the image i wanted to as she could not pose and jump at the same time. Also i test shot a female and male model together and felt the image i wished to portray fron the cover was not working as i felt i would look more like a fashion based magazine rather than a music magazine , where a single artist would appear on the cover. The test images of my model stood still worked therefore i will elaborate on this with my final shoot and keep the musical instrument in the shoot aswell as i felt these two concepts worked in the test shoot.

Cover theme

On the cover of my magazine i have chosen to follow through with the genre of my music magazine ' inide pop' , and to feature a female on my cover with the purpose of creating a 'rock chick' look. I will follow conventions of other music magazine covers which have featured females and intend to create a cover with a female indie pop star featured on the Cover. I have chosen to have my model with windswept hair to create a 'wild' look'. This is demenstrated in the image's of Kate Moss and Ashley Oslen pictured above. I also intend to have my cover model posing with a guitar , inorder to create a strong representation of an indie pop star , following the obvious conventions of other magazine's. I will develop further from the image of Kate Moss and her guitair when creating my Indie Pop Music magazine cover.
